If you’ve ever had a canker sore before, then you know how annoying and painful it can be. Canker sores are small, red ulcers that tend to grow inside your mouth, like on your tongue and on the insides of your lips and cheeks. Sometimes the sores can develop in groups and they begin with a burning and tingling sensation. To help you know a little more about the little trouble makers, our Stone Lodge Dental team has provided the following information:
The cause of canker sores is unknown, but we have found that most people have the sores when they:
· Are tired and stressed
· Hurt or injure their mouth
· Have braces
· Have food allergies
· Eat or drink a product that has a large amount of acid
· Do not get enough vitamins and minerals in their diet
You don’t generally need a treatment for your canker sore because it should go away in a couple days. However, if you don’t want to wait for the sore to disappear, you can try using antimicrobial mouthwash, corticosteroid ointment, or an over-the-counter numbing solution. It is also recommended to avoid eating hot and spicy foods, foods with sharp edges (like nacho chips), and acidic products.
Your dentist, Dr. Ernesto Prida, and our friendly dental team care about you and your oral health, which is why we strongly recommend doing everything you can to keep a strong, healthy, and beautiful smile.
